Forms of Media (1.3.3)

Media refers to any means of communication that reaches a large audience, and can be broadly categorized into three forms:

  1. Print Media: Print media refers to traditional forms of media that are printed on paper, such as newspapers, magazines, books, and other printed materials. These forms of media have been around for centuries and are still widely used today, although their popularity has decreased due to the rise of electronic and digital media.
  2. Electronic Media: Electronic media refers to media that is transmitted electronically, such as radio, television, and film. These forms of media have been around since the early 20th century and have been widely used for entertainment and information dissemination
  3. Digital Media: Digital media refers to any form of media that is stored or transmitted electronically, such as text, images, video, or audio. This includes new media, digital media, and social media.


  • New Media: New media refers to any form of media that has emerged since the advent of digital technologies, such as the internet, mobile devices, and social media. Examples of new media include websites, blogs, podcasts, and online video platforms like YouTube.
  • Digital Media: Digital media encompasses all forms of media that are stored or transmitted digitally, including new media. It includes e-books, digital magazines, streaming services like Netflix, and social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
  • Social Media: Social media refers specifically to digital media platforms that are designed to facilitate social interaction and user-generated content. Examples of social media include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
