Normative Theories of Press (1.1.3)

Normative theories of press are theories that seek to establish the ideal role and purpose of the media in society. These theories are based on normative assumptions about how the media should function and what values they should uphold. There are four main normative theories of the press which include authoritarian theory, libertarian theory, social responsibility theory, and Soviet Communist theory.

  • Authoritarian theory: This theory assumes that the media should be controlled by the government or a ruling elite to maintain social order and stability. The media is viewed as a tool for propaganda, promoting the interests of the ruling elite, and ensuring that the populace is kept in line. Supporters of this theory argue that the media should be subservient to the state and not challenge the status quo
  • Libertarian theory: The libertarian theory emphasizes individual freedom and the free flow of information. It advocates for the media to be free from government control and interference, and instead operate as an independent watchdog to expose corruption and hold those in power accountable. Supporters of this theory argue that a free and independent media is essential for a healthy democracy.
  • Social responsibility theory: This theory emphasizes the media's responsibility to serve the public interest and uphold democratic values. The media is viewed as a crucial institution that acts as a watchdog to ensure that those in power are held accountable, and that the public is informed about important issues. Supporters of this theory argue that the media should be independent, but also subject to certain ethical standards and accountable to the public.
  • Soviet Communist theory: This theory emphasizes the media's role in promoting socialist values and the collective interests of the community. The media is seen as a tool for promoting social change and ensuring that the populace is informed about important issues. Supporters of this theory argue that the media should be subject to state control and should promote the values of the socialist state.
