Social and Para-Social Media (1.4.4)
Social media refers to digital platforms and tools that enable individuals to create, share, and exchange information and content with others. Examples of social media platforms include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok, among others.
On the other hand, parasocial media refers to a type of media where individuals develop one-sided, one-directional relationships with media personalities or celebrities through their digital content. This type of media has become increasingly popular due to the rise of social media and increased access to digital content.
In parasocial media, the individual feels a sense of connection with the media personality or celebrity, despite having no actual personal relationship with them. This sense of connection is often facilitated by the personal nature of the content shared by the media personality, as well as the ability of social media to create a sense of intimacy between individuals who may be physically distant.
Overall, social media and parasocial media have revolutionized the way people consume and interact with media content. However, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with these platforms, such as the spread of misinformation, cyberbullying, and the potential for addiction and mental health issues.
